Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery

Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery

The cardiothoracic surgeons at Lima Memorial Heart and Vascular Institute are the region’s leading specialists in minimally invasive cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, procedures that offer many patients less discomfort, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery.

What is minimally invasive surgery?

Minimally invasive cardiac surgery is performed using small incisions and very small, specialized surgical instruments. The incision is two to four inches long and made through the ribs, rather than the six- to eight-inch incision down the middle of the chest required for most open-heart surgeries. Even less invasive procedures that reach the heart through large blood vessels in the thigh are used for some types of surgery.

What are the benefits of minimally invasive heart surgery?

  • Smaller incisions
  • Smaller scar
  • Less bleeding
  • Less pain and trauma
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery time: average recovery time is two to four weeks compared to six to eight weeks for traditional heart surgery
