Palliative Care

Palliative Care

What is Palliative Care?

Palliative care is specialized medical care for people dealing with a long term, serious illness. This type of care helps treat the symptoms of the illness, as well as the stress one might experience while coping with day-to-day life with the illness. The ultimate goal is to improve quality of life for the patient and the patient’s family.

Palliative care is provided by our specially-trained staff at Lima Memorial and can be done alongside any treatments the patient may be taking for their illness.

Treatment at Lima Memorial

When you or a loved one is diagnosed with a serious or chronic illness, life as you know it changes. You may need additional information and support to help adjust through these changes. Dealing with a chronic illness day-to-day can add extra stress beyond that of treatments.

Palliative care provides this support for patients and their families and is appropriate at any age and any stage of an illness. It is centered on the patient’s physical, emotional, social and spiritual care to improve quality of life. This specialized medical care focuses on pain and symptom management for people with serious or chronic illnesses.

Our team approach will allow clinicians to manage distressing symptoms, such as pain, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, anxiety, loss of appetite and other symptoms that are often a result of illness or treatment. We will honor your wishes by facilitating discussions about your healthcare decisions throughout your illness. Care beyond a cure is our focus.
